Avatar box office sales, Avatar box office gross: Avatar Christmas weekend gross to a record $278 m. Was it at the cinemas where people celebrated this Christmas? Riding on the back of Avatar and Sherlock Holmes, ticket sales have set the highest-grossing weekend record with a $278 million gross.

Running in second week, James Cameron’s effects-extravaganza Avatar took in $75 million to top the gross-chart. 20th Century Fox has lost just 2 percent in ticket sales, from the movie’s opening gross. The movie has raked in $212.3 million in just two weeks.

Warner Bros’ Sherlock Holmes landed in second place with $65.4 million. Alvin and the Chipmunks: the Squeakqeul sold tickets worth $50.2 million (the original film had made 44 percent less gross) to finish third.

Fourth and five places went to the opening film It’s Complicated and the four-week-old Up in the Air which respectively took in $22 million and $11.8 million.

The Christmas weekend’s $278 million-worth sales pushed back July 2008 record of $261 million that was fuelled mainly by the record gross of The Dark Knight. The record gross is good news for all movies waiting to be released this weekend.

On December 25, Sherlock Holmes pulled in $24.9 million setting a new Christmas Day record.

When Christmas Day falls on a Friday it seems to be the best possible day, as Bert Livingston of 20th Century Fox responded to the record gross.
