HAMPTON – Sprint Nextel Corp. is hiring about 100 new workers for its Hampton call center, the company said Wednesday.

Sprint will hold a series of job fairs in January in its search to fill the positions. The first session was held Wednesday in Norfolk.

The Overland Park, Kan.-based company hopes to begin hiring immediately, said Roni Singleton, a Sprint spokeswoman.

The call center, with about 750 employees, has been in Hampton for about 10 years and is routinely ranked as one of the highest-performing in the company, Sprint said. Employees there work on customer-care issues.

In April, the call center added about 70 workers during another hiring push.

“We’ve had a goal of improving our customer care, and in doing so, we are looking to expand our top-performing sites,” Singleton said.

Sprint’s three job sessions will be held at the following dates and times:

• 10 a.m. to noon Jan. 12, Goodwill Employment Center, 313 High St., Portsmouth

• 10 a.m. to noon Jan. 14, Virginia Employment Commission, 600 Butler Farm Road, Hampton

• 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jan. 21, Norfolk Workforce Center, 143 Granby St., Norfolk

The company recently announced that it entered into a partnership with Cox Communications, in which Cox will use Sprint’s wireless network for its new Hampton Roads wireless service.

The two announcements are unrelated, Singleton said.
