Revelers thronged Times Square: Times Square new years eve 2010 live & new years eve Times Square live. Hundreds of thousands of revelers and hundreds of the New York City cops gathered in Times Square on Thursday night, the former to witness the ritual countdown to the New Year and the latter to provide security.

Revelers crowded Times Square, ignoring the plummeting mercury, the chilling snow coupled with a cold rain and terror threats.

The countdown began 60 seconds before midnight with the New Year ball of Waterford crystals decorated with LED bulbs tumbling down from the top of a pole.

Officials ensured tight security, deploying additional troops and having the entire Manhattan area air-patrolled.

Barricades were erected to stop vehicles from entering the main plaza. The police welcomed people with hand-held metal detectors at the entrance where radiation and biological detectors were also in place.

Alcoholic beverages were a strict no no in Times Square last night. 150 well-equipped sanitation sweepers were sent immediately after midnight to clean up the place as official had expected 40 tonnes of garbage including party hats, 2010 glasses, noisemakers, confetti, and streamers.

Best ranked children from 12 public schools lent a helping hand to Mayor Michael Bloomberg and his officials in getting Times Square ready for the gala event of the New Year Eve.
