It’s going to reduce the cost, and it’s going to make the books easier to deliver,” said Mary Pom Claiborne with the Knox County Library. “Some mailboxes are too small for hard cover books, so making them soft cover will make them easier to deliver.

Rising postal charges had worried officials that some counties might be forced to drop out of the program.

The first and last books children receive will still be hard cover. The younger kids will get board books, designed for their age group.
