Even now, it's hard to understand how this became Leach's Waterloo. James, the son of former SMU standout and current ESPN analyst Craig James, suffered a concussion in practice, When Adam James returned but was unable to practice, Leach had him placed in a dark, equipment-storage room near the practice field.

When James received the same treatment at the next practice, being put in a media room next to Jones AT&T Stadium, his parents became involved. When Leach declined to apologize, he was suspended indefinitely by Tech, giving members of the administration the opening it needed to dismiss him for cause.
