2010 CENSUS
On April 1, 2010, the U. S. Census Bureau will spend US$11-billion conducting a count of everyone living in the United States, as mandated by the country's Constitution. Because the information gathered during this exercise will frame policy and funding debates for the next 10 years, there is a great deal of controversy over who will collect the data and how they will do it.
Some Republicans are upset that the Census Bureau partners with ideological organizations like ACORN (the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now), a group that has been accused of voter registration fraud, to hire census-takers.
"I do not trust ACORN," Utah Congressman Jason Chaffetz says. He is proposing having the U. S. postal service go door-to-door with the census questions instead, since it is a more reliable organization.
Gay rights activists have a different objection: They're unhappy that same-sex marriages won't be counted by the census. Or will they? Some news outlets have been reporting that the White House has promised to count same-sex marriages, and the story has enough currency that three gay U. S. representatives put out a press release expressing their happiness that the "Obama administration is seeking ways to include same-sex marriages, unions and partnerships in 2010 census data."

FARRAH FAWCETT POSTER
The most famous of Charlie's angels -- Farrah Fawcett -- died yesterday from cancer after two-and-a-half years of illness. Fawcett first appeared on Charlie's Angels in 1976 -- the same year that a now-classic poster of her posing in a swimsuit first started appearing on dorm room walls.
