Juneteenth re-enactment set for today

A 21st century-style re-enactment of U.S. Major Gen. Gordon Granger’s June 19, 1865, freeing of Texas slaves will be among highlights of today’s Buffalo Soldiers National Museum Juneteenth Freedom Festival on downtown’s Jones Plaza.

The festival, which wraps up the area’s major Juneteenth celebrations, which have included concerts, re-enactments and parades, will start at noon and continue until 10 p.m. at the plaza, 601 Louisiana.

At noon, members of motorcycle clubs associated with the museum will ride up Texas Avenue with a copy of the Emancipation Proclamation.

A concert featuring bass guitarist and vocalist Michael Henderson, blues artist Cherrelle and jazz vocalist Allan Harris will begin at 6 p.m.

Admission is $10, with proceeds going to the museum’s $4.1 million campaign to move to a new location.

Granger, who was the federal commander of the Texas military district, issued General Order No. 3, advising Texas slaves of Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation and their freedom, from Galveston’s old Osterman Building on June 19, 1865.
