A lot of times you can search the mall and the department stores for the special gift that is not even used. I remember when I was 16, I had a little part time job and set out to buy my dad a great shirt for Father's Day. I spent hours at the mall and found just the right one. That was many years ago and I'm sure that he still hasn't worn it yet. He still has it, but has not worn it.
Handmade gifts are thoughtful. It is something to hold onto and look at throughout the year. It tells Dad that you really care enough to take the time to give a gift made from your hands. Here are some ideas:
A handmade card is always nice. You can get some colored construction paper. Fold it in half like a regular card size. You can buy letters to put into the card or cut out letters from a magazine. Use pictures that you have taken in the past year and make a collage of sorts within your card. Be sure to add a very personal sentiment. I'm not sure about you, but store cards do not say quite what I want them to.
Make Dad's favorite dinner. Cooking his favorite meal complete with dessert will be a wonderful surprise. You can even set the table with mats. The mats can be created with pictures glued on construction paper and laminated. If your Dad's favorite meal is pizza, have all of the kids put the ingredients on it before it goes in the oven. It's important that all of the children play a part.
Have a picnic for Dad. Put together a basket full of special treats for Dad to enjoy. If it's raining, you can bring your picnic indoors. Pull out the picnic blanket and set the basket down. Even if the weather isn't wonderful, you can still have a great time.
A coupon book is an oldie but goodie. Make coupons using the borders or check out some ideas online. A coupon book can have things such as breakfast in bed, car wash, mow the lawn, or quiet during his favorite television show/sporting event.
Make a "Why I love you" document. Have the kids list down 10 or 15 items they love about Dad. Grab a frame from Hobby Lobby or Michael's and frame the document. Dad will love it. My kids come up with really silly things like "I love Dad because he shares his cereal with me."
Handmade gifts are very unique and special. You may decide to conserve money for budget reasons or really just love making things with the children. Either way, the ideas above will be perfect or get your creative juices flowing. Tomorrow we will discuss gift ideas to your husband for Father's Day.
